In lieu of taking your case to court you may find success in simply negotiating with your employer. Here are some tips on how to initiate and work through a workplace negotiation.

Three Things You Can Do Right Now.
  1. Find out what your claim is worth in dollar value. You can talk to an attorney for this purpose. You may get some guidance by asking attorneys, at no cost, at
  2. Make your first “ask” reasonable. Making a demand for a million dollars when the settlement range for your case is in the range of $10,000 to $20,000 will only result in loss of credibility.
  3. Consider “non-monetary” options. You can, for instance, request that your former employer agree to characterize your departure as a resignation rather than a termination. In some instances, you can even negotiate what your employer will say when references call.
